Footprints

Hello world, I’m Sean.

For my first post I thought I’d look at where we are now. To do this, I’ve had a quick go with a couple of online tools.

The first is the WWF’s Ecological Footprint calculator. This works out how many planets we would need to support everyone in the world if they lived like us. The UK average is around 3.1 planets, China 0.9 and the US 5.3

So our result: 2.15 planets or 3.88 global hectares, and a carbon footprint of 7.51 tonnes.

There are other sites around as well, so I thought I’d try Act On CO2 to see if it gave a similar answer. It came up with 6.73 tonnes per year, compared to the National Average of 10.22 tonnes.

Hmm, bit of a difference there, though both show that we’re already doing better than average.

Some the big villains in our house are the old, inefficient appliances, like our fridge, freezer and dishwasher. But then you have to ask, if they ain’t broke will replacing them do more harm than good? Also, if we aren’t going to buy new stuff then it would hard to pick up something second hand that is substantially more energy & water efficient.
