On Saturday I went to Wyecycle’s monthly swap day. Kind of like a physical Freecycle. So I bought a bag of things we no longer needed (three rolls of bin bags that dont fit our bin, free samples of stuff, cuttery draw and many other totally fascinating things) put them on the floor and then had a look at all the other things people had also put on the floor.
Desperately tried repeating to myself: “no more tut, no more tut”, but still came away with about the same amount of things I arrived with. Darn it! Do I really need another coffee press? – well if lots of people come to the house, I can make one batch of coffee, rather than several…..listen to me trying to justify it! Good grief. Yeah but the hand puppet for Megan was cool….
In fact this is all bringing out my inner geek, and I have started to keep track of stuff coming into the house and stuff going out. I want to be in the ‘less stuff’ category by the end of the 6 months. Have a healthy amount of things for sale on ebay, just need to stop cruising ebay for a shopping fix. This is working out what we really NEED, not what we can ‘justify’ that we need/want etc..
Ultimately things go round and round. We need to re-think ownership. Sure, I own this ’stuff’ for now, but not forever. I am not immortal, or are any of us. Stuff needs to go round and round to do honour to the resources it was made from and the people who made it, not chucked into landfil and forgotten about.
